When homeowners search for mood lighting in Austin, they’re rarely looking for a few color-changing bulbs.
They’re looking for a complete transformation.
This flagship Austin project demonstrates how immersive RGB lighting, layered architectural design, and fully integrated smart automation can reshape how a home feels — day and night.
Rather than simply installing fixtures, this project focused on intentional lighting design: blending deep RGB ceiling coves, architectural wall washing, programmable scenes, and seamless smart lighting installation into one cohesive system.
The result was not just upgraded lighting — it was a shift in atmosphere, flexibility, and emotional impact.
In this case study, we’ll walk through:
• The design strategy behind the transformation
• How RGB lighting was integrated architecturally
• The smart lighting system powering the scenes
• The impact on daily living and entertaining
For Austin homeowners considering a similar upgrade, this project offers a clear look at what’s possible when lighting is treated as design — not an afterthought.
This wasn't a typical single-family home. The property includes a 4,200-square-foot main residence, a 1,100-square-foot guest house, and extensive outdoor spaces including a pool area, hot tub, wraparound deck, and mature oak trees lining the property.
Before we arrived, the lighting situation was exactly what you'd expect from a home built in the early 2000s: builder-grade fixtures, a handful of dimmer switches that nobody used, and outdoor lighting limited to a few motion-activated floodlights.
The homeowners had tried DIY smart bulbs in a few rooms, but quickly hit the wall every Austin homeowner discovers: controlling lights room-by-room from six different apps isn't smart—it's exhausting.
We had six days to deliver.
Prior to the redesign, the home relied on standard recessed overhead lighting and isolated task lamps. While functional, the lighting lacked:
• Depth
• Emotional impact
• Scene flexibility
• Architectural integration
Evenings felt static. Entertaining required manual adjustments. Rooms lacked dimensionality.
Following the transformation, the lighting became immersive and programmable.
Deep RGB ceiling coves created atmosphere. Architectural 1 of 1 track lighting system added layered and captivating ambience. Scenes allowed curated transitions from relaxed evenings to high-energy gatherings.
The space shifted from illuminated to intentional.
Every room in this project required a layered lighting strategy—combining ambient, task, and accent lighting to create depth and flexibility. But because the goal was whole-property integration, we also had to think about how light would flow between spaces as the family moved through their day.
We built the entire system on the Philips Hue ecosystem, selected for its reliability, color accuracy, and native circadian lighting support. Two Hue Bridges provide coverage across both structures, all unified through Samsung SmartThings as the central control platform.
Here's how we approached each zone.
This project began with a structured evaluation similar to our lighting design services in Austin, where architecture and lifestyle guide every decision.

The great room, dining room, and kitchen form the heart of this home—an open floor plan where the family spends most waking hours. We installed 18 recessed smart downlights across these spaces, each capable of shifting from cool, energizing daylight tones (5000K) in the morning to warm, relaxing amber (2700K) in the evening.
This circadian lighting programming happens automatically. The lights gradually adjust throughout the day to match natural light patterns, helping regulate the family's internal clocks without anyone lifting a finger. The homeowners reported within the first week that their kids were falling asleep faster—and the adults weren't far behind.
The system required precision smart lighting installation to ensure seamless integration across zones.
For entertaining, we added Philips Hue gradient lightstrips behind the living room's 65" Samsung Frame TV. When movie night starts, the lights sync with on-screen content, extending the viewing experience across the entire wall. When the credits roll, the room gradually transitions back to warm ambient lighting.
The primary bedroom received dedicated circadian programming separate from the rest of the house. A gentle sunrise simulation begins 30 minutes before the alarm, gradually increasing light intensity to wake the homeowners naturally. At night, the room automatically shifts to warm, dim lighting after 9 PM—no more harsh bathroom light shocking you awake during a midnight trip.
The ensuite bathroom features IP-rated Hue fixtures around the vanity mirror plus warm-toned strip lighting along the floating tub. The "spa mode" scene dims everything to candlelight levels while the soaking tub fills.
This room became the project's showpiece. The homeowners wanted something special for their children—a space that could transform from focused playroom to imaginative adventure zone.
We created a custom "thunder cloud" ceiling effect using Govee LED Strip Light 2 Pro, mounted in a cloud-like formation across the ceiling. The RGBIC technology allows different segments to display different colors simultaneously, creating realistic rolling thunderstorm effects, gentle aurora waves, or pulsing rainbow patterns that flow across the ceiling. Six additional smart downlights provide practical illumination for homework and crafts, while Philips Hue gradient strips around the room's perimeter create ambient color washes.
The kids now have scene presets for "Reading Time" (bright, focused white light), "Dance Party" (pulsing colors synced to music), and "Thunderstorm" (dramatic blues and whites rolling across the ceiling). Their favorite? Showing it off to every friend who visits.
For two parents who work from home regularly, proper office lighting wasn't optional. We installed dedicated task lighting above each desk plus ambient fixtures that maintain energizing 5000K color temperature throughout the workday.
The key feature here: automatic "end of day" transition. At 6 PM, the office lighting gradually warms and dims, signaling that work hours are over. It's a subtle psychological cue that helps maintain work-life boundaries—something Austin's tech workers increasingly prioritize.
Too often, guest houses become lighting afterthoughts—a few lamps, maybe a porch light. This family wanted their guests to experience the same whole-home integration they enjoy daily.
We installed 10 strategic smart downlights throughout the guest house, programmed with the same circadian rhythm as the main residence. The guest bedroom gets the same gentle sunrise simulation. The living area shifts from productive to relaxing as evening approaches.
For entertainment, we added a Sonos Arc Ultra soundbar with Sub 4 integrated into the lighting system. When guests activate "Movie Mode," the lights dim automatically and the TV powers on.
A Govee Galaxy projector in the bedroom provides an optional starfield effect for guests who want something more atmospheric than traditional nightlights.
Let's be honest—in Austin, outdoor living isn't a luxury; it's how we live. This property's outdoor spaces see more entertaining traffic than the living room, which meant exterior lighting needed to work just as hard as interior lighting.
20 Philips Hue Lily XL spotlights illuminate the property's mature oak trees from below, creating dramatic uplighting that transforms the backyard into an outdoor room after sunset. 25 Hue Amarant linear fixtures line the property's key pathways and garden beds, providing both safety and ambiance.
9 Hue Impress pedestals mark the main walkways, automatically activating at dusk and dimming to low-level wayfinding after midnight.
The pool perimeter features waterproof LED strip lighting that can shift colors for parties or stay warm white for family swims. The hot tub area received dedicated Hue outdoor strips around the surround, creating an intimate spa atmosphere.
Security floodlights with smart integration provide full-brightness illumination when needed, but default to warm, low-level accent lighting during evening gatherings.
The wraparound deck sees everything from Tuesday night family dinners to 50-person Formula 1 watch parties. We installed Nanoleaf outdoor string lights for festive occasions plus dedicated downlighting over the main dining area.
The homeowners can switch between "Family Dinner" (warm, intimate lighting focused on the table), "Game Day" (bright, energizing light across the full deck), and "Date Night" (dim accent lighting with colored pool effects) with a single voice command.
Every fixture across both properties—all 99 of them—connects through Samsung SmartThings as the central hub. The homeowners control everything from their phones, but more often use Alexa voice commands throughout the house.
"Alexa, good morning" activates the circadian wake-up sequence in the primary suite and starts the coffee maker.
"Alexa, movie time" dims the great room, activates TV sync lighting, and closes the motorized shades.
"Alexa, goodnight" runs a 30-minute wind-down sequence throughout the house, gradually dimming all lights and ending with only low-level nightlights active.
The professional training session we provide with every installation took 90 minutes—enough time to ensure both homeowners felt confident managing scenes, adjusting schedules, and adding new automations themselves.
The transformation extended far beyond aesthetics.
Before this project, the home relied primarily on static overhead lighting — functional but flat. Evenings felt bright yet uninspiring. Entertaining lacked atmosphere. Rooms transitioned abruptly from daylight to darkness without intentional design.
After the transformation, lighting became dynamic, immersive, and responsive.
Architectural RGB integration created dramatic depth across ceilings, walls, and architectural features. Rather than isolated color accents, the lighting enveloped the space — shifting the emotional tone instantly.
• Soft indigo scenes for relaxed evenings
• Vibrant violet and electric blue scenes for entertaining
• Subtle amber blends for intimate gatherings
RGB was no longer decorative — it became architectural.
Instead of adjusting multiple switches, the homeowner now activates complete lighting environments with a single command.
Custom scenes were programmed for:
• Entertaining
• Wind-down evenings
• Movie nights
• Late-night navigation
• Everyday living
The experience shifted from manual control to intelligent automation.
By integrating ambient, task, and accent lighting into one cohesive system, the home achieved visual balance.
No harsh overhead glare.
No dark corners.
No competing brightness levels.
Lighting now supports architecture instead of fighting it.
The home became adaptable.
With programmable RGB scenes, the space transitions effortlessly from relaxed dinner ambiance to high-energy social atmosphere without physical adjustments.
This flexibility is especially valuable in Austin’s open-concept homes, where one lighting level rarely fits every activity.
Well-designed smart lighting often changes how a home feels more dramatically than new furnishings.
Guests immediately notice:
• Depth
• Warmth
• Dimension
• Atmosphere
The project demonstrates how strategic lighting design can elevate the perceived luxury of a space without structural renovation.
